Beyond picking things that sound good, we here at the Hot Rats Listening Party are equally concerned with why things sound like they do. Join the Party each week for a different theme and songs that explore that theme – across style, genre, and time. One week we might look at the way musicians translate literature into song, and the next it might be an examination of the 60s nostalgia wave that rocked the 1980s. One week may explore funky time signatures, and the next the saxophone across history. From classical to punk, soul to metal – nothing is off limits. Music reflects humanity in that it’s all connected, so you never know what you’ll hear. You’ll just have to tune in to find out!
My love for music was instilled in me at an early age by my mother, who loved classic rock and new wave and filled as much of our days as possible with it. I took that love to the University of Alaska Anchorage’s station, KRUA, where I first hosted the Hot Rats Listening Party (for me it’s been Hot Rat Summer since 2013!) and fell in love with the way that music reflects the human condition. I moved from Anchorage to Seattle in 2015 after a brief stint in northern Manitoba. I live here with my husband and our rascally orange cat. In my spare time you can find me testing out recipes for cocktails and vegetarian meals or reviewing albums – I’ve written reviews for over 300 albums since 2019 as well as several longform essays on albums for the Indieheads community online.
