Your volunteer efforts help power SPACE 101.1

We are a small station with a big impact. That impact is made possible by the hundreds of volunteer hours put in by people like you. People with an interest in amplifying the music of Northwest artists/bands, building community, and getting things done. As a non-commercial community radio station SPACE 101.1 is driven by volunteers from our communities that are at the heart of the work we do. By working together, we are empowered to create amazing radio.

Who should volunteer?

Quite frankly, anyone with an interest in what we do and why we do it. We have volunteers ranging in age from 14 up to 80. We seek and value different perspectives and diverse communities. Are you a student or a teacher? Perfect! Are you working full-time but have some spare time on the weekends? No problem. Are you retired and looking for a new way to focus your energies? Excellent. Being a SPACE 101.1 volunteer is an activity that fits to your schedule, interests, and desired commitment. You decide if you want to help with just a few events per year, have time once a month, or want to come in a few hours every week. We find that people who get the most out of volunteering are motivated, reliable, and can function with minimal supervision.

The many ways volunteers can help

Whether you have specific skills already or you would like to learn something new, there are so many different ways that you can contribute to our efforts here at SPACE 101.1. Here are a few examples of how you can contribute to making SPACE 101.1 reach further into the stars.

On-Air DJ or Program Host

We air all types of music and public affairs programming. If you have a program idea and would like to air it on SPACE 101.1, we’d love to hear about it. We are especially interested in unique and locally focused content that is not heard elsewhere on the Seattle radio dial. No previous DJ experience is necessary, and if you do have experience but are a bit rusty, we offer free training. Even if you are not sure if you want to do the “technical stuff” of being a DJ, we can pair you with a “board operator” and just leave the talking/interviewing to you.

Board Operator

Some radio studio roles don’t involve talking on the mic. Periodically we need people to sit behind the controls and manage things while someone else conducts an interview or does a show from a remote location.

Production

Another behind the scenes role is helping with recording and editing the various content we put over the airwaves. We need people to write and record Public Service Announcements (PSAs), program and event promotional announcements, and underwriting spots. We need people to listen to, and sometimes edit some of the syndicated programs we get from places outside Seattle. And if you have an interest in sound engineering, we sometimes need assistance with our live concerts and events.

Artistic / Creative

Are you a writer, artist, photographer, or social media whiz? We are always looking for assistance in producing social media posts, website content, and putting together material for our email newsletter, promotions, etc. We have an urgent need for photographers and videographers for our live concerts and events.

Promotions

Hard to believe, but not everyone in Seattle has heard about this great little radio station. We need help to get the word out. We need assistance putting up yard signs in various neighborhoods, dropping off fliers or posters to local businesses, and tabling at events or community fairs. We especially need assistance drafting press releases or online communications and content for our social media channels.

Organizational

If you like to stay on top of things and are organized, then you may enjoy helping us with compiling information, documenting volunteer hours and events, data entry, mailing thank you cards and promotional materials, or scheduling communications.

Fundraising

We are a non-profit, but money is still required to keep the lights on and our signal transmitting and streaming. We need people to assist with coordinating underwriting, creating fundraising pitches, writing grant applications, and helping with donor communications. Have experience in radio underwriting? We’d love your help developing SPACE’s underwriting strategy.

Technical

At times we need assistance with our computers, internet connectivity and streaming connections, studio gear, and broadcast equipment. If you have IT, computer programming, or broadcast engineering skills we could use your expertise.

Ready to join our volunteer community?

If you are ready to get involved, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Step 1: The first step is to complete our volunteer interest form below. Although we ask you about previous radio experience and skills, it’s ok if you don’t have specific skills as we can provide free training for most tasks. If you are interested in being an On-Air DJ or Host you will have a few additional questions to complete on the form. Please note that once you submit the form, it may take a few weeks to hear back.

Step 2: We will arrange for a meet and greet session so you can learn more about SPACE 101.1 and we can learn more about you, your skills, and your interests. This meeting usually takes about 30 minutes. These meetings are typically held at the radio station in Magnuson Park and include a tour of our studio. We are happy to make accommodations if you are not able to travel to the station.

Step 3: If all systems are GO, and you are ready for the SPACE 101.1 adventure, we will schedule time for training (if necessary) and get you set up to begin your volunteer activity / task. Keep in mind that some tasks may be on a regular basis while others may be infrequent. We will work with you to determine the best tasks for your schedule and desired time commitment.

Note that there may be periodic all volunteer meetings we will ask you to attend (1 or 2 per year), and opportunities for social gatherings to meet your fellow volunteers, and SPACE 101.1 staff.
